The role of poetry in Hausa society in the mid-twentieth century, Sa'adu appeared to be the leading poet in Northern Nigeria. Before discussing his poems, there were poems written in the nineteenth and early twentieth century. This will enable us to see the development and types of poetry written at that time and how they differ in theme and context from those of Sa'adu.
